Wisconsin bats use echolocation to hunt and navigate. Bats echolocate in the ultrasonic range, making it inaudible to humans. Using a handheld ultrasonic detector, bat calls can be captured and translated to a particular species based on frequency, shape and other characteristics. With the newly introduced White-nose Syndrome in the state, the Citizen Science Center is helping Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources collect important data to better understand these obscure, flying mammals. This program will begin with a short educational presentation on the bats of Wisconsin. Then join us on a night hike as we conduct an Acoustic Bat Survey, updating the Reserve?s bat species list.
